Becky’s list of safe (Gluten Free) places to eat

New to a place, try the Find Me Gluten Free app. It has helped me find places when I’m in unfamiliar territory. Sometimes it is very limited in what it finds. It would be nice to see more information in that database.

San Francisco Bay Area (Safe options):

  • In-N-Out Burger: The only thing they have on their menu with gluten is the bun. If you ask for your burger “protein style” it is wrapped in lettuce. If you tell them you have a gluten allergy, the will put your burger and fries in a separate bag (I usually specify this when I order). Fries are gluten free (yay). I have eaten burgers, fries, and vanilla milkshakes without getting sick.
  • Asian Box: This place is a gem. Fresh, healthy, asian food (Vietnamese style). The owner’s son is celiac, so they created a dedicated gluten free facility. It is a local chain with restaurants in Mountain View, Palo Alto, SF and LA. I often use this when we are going someplace else that doesn’t have anything I can eat (e.g. picnic lunches).
  • Fish Market Seafood Restaurant: This again is chain. They have a gluten free menu. The servers are not always aware, so you need to explain a little. I’ve had great meals there, and haven’t gotten sick yet.

San Francisco Bay Area (OK but not great):

  • Sato Sushi: Had sushi here the other day. You need to specify and check. We were clear that I could not have tobiko, but a roll that wasn’t supposed to have it arrived and I almost ate it – my husband noticed. The food was mediocre, so I don’t think I’ll be eating their again. It just wasn’t good enough to risk it. I did manage to not get sick but it required a little more diligence than I want when I’m eating out.
